Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of Croatia.

The city was founded in the Middle Ages as two separate but neighboring settlements, Kaptol and Gradec, which today make up Gornji Grad (Upper Town). Kaptol was a religious center, built around the cathedral, while Gradec was the home to craftsmen and merchants who supplied the needs of the Kaptol clergy. Although relations between the two were strained, outsiders saw them as a single town, which they referred to as Zagreb (meaning behind the hill). In 1557, the settlement became Croatias capital, with the parliament meeting alternately in Gradec and Kaptol. It was not until 1850 that the two parts were united to become the city of Zagreb.

The climate of Zagreb is continental, with four separate seasons. Summers are hot and dry, and winters are cold. Snowfall is common in the winter months, from December to March, and rain and fog are common in fall (October to December).

The city centre lies in two parts: Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and Donji Grad (Lower Town) which meets at Trg Bana Jelacica, the main square. Picturesque Gornji Grad is made up of higgledy-piggledy cobbled streets and buildings dating from medieval times up to the 19th century. Donji Grad follows a geometrical grid-plan, with a series of green squares rimmed by Austro-Hungarian buildings erected from the late-19th century onwards.

Zagreb nightlife is primarily student-orientated, with the highest concentration of small bars and cafes lining the pretty street of Tkalciceva in Gornji Grad.
