Moscow is the capital of Russia, and the country’s economic, financial, educational, and transportation centre.

The city is named after the river. The origin of the name is unknown, although several theories exist. One theory suggests that the source of the name is an ancient Finnic language, in which it means “dark” and “turbid”. The first Russian reference to Moscow dates from 1147 when Yuri Dolgoruki called upon the prince of the Novgorod Republic.

Moscow has a humid continental climate with warm, somewhat humid summers and long, cold winters.

There are 96 parks and 18 gardens in Moscow, including 4 botanical gardens. Moscow is a very green city if compared to other cities of comparable size in Western Europe and America.

Despite the long nights and cold weather, in recent years Moscow has become a truly 24-hour city. The range of chic bars, clubs and live entertainment on offer is extensive. Most places operate a strict door policy: whether that means ’face control’ to keep out hooligans or to keep out those in last season’s Prada depends on whether it is ‘democratichny’ or ‘elitny’.
