Quick Holiday Overview
Go in search of the Northern lights in 2018!
Tromso is known as the Gateway to the Arctic. It is located in the middle of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) zone and is therefore one of the best places in the world to observe this phenomenon. This tour is something truly special offering you the fantastic opportunity to experience the Aurora from a plane as you sip a glass of champagne viewing this natural phenomenon from an entirely unique perspective.
About the Holiday
Saturday – 17 February: Tromsø
You will arrive in Tromsø and make your own way to your centrally located hotel. Hereafter the rest of the day will be at your leisure. As previously mentioned Tromsø is known as the Gateway to the Arctic because it has been the launching point for many of the more well-known Arctic expeditions. The city is also home to the world’s northernmost university, brewery and cathedral, making it almost a last bastion of civilsation before the wilds of the Arctic. ‘Paris of the North’ is they city’s second nickname due to the direct trader connections it had with France during the 19th century.
Overnight: Tromsø (B)
Sunday – 18 February: Aurora flight
The day today will be entirely at your leisure before the highlight of this tour takes place in the late evening. The first suggested highlight to visit in Tromsø would be the previously mentioned northernmost cathedral in the world, the Arctic Cathedral an unmistakably unique structure in the city with its angular form. You could also visit Polaria, an adventure centre dedicated to past polar expeditions, current environmental concerns for the region and an aquarium. If the weather is clear then you should take the famous “Fjelleheisen” (cable car) which takes you up to Storsteinen (Big Rock) on mount Fløya, 421 meters above sea level, which as one can imagine offers unparalleled views of Tromsø and the surrounding islands and fjords.
Then in the late evening after dinner time it will finally be time for this tour’s highlight, the Northern Lights flight. You will board the bus which will take your to the airport from where your plane will depart at 22h00. Flying high up in the sky like this offers not only a unique vantage point of the Aurora Borealis but also allows one to cover vast distances in a short period of time should the natural phenomenon have chosen to appear in a different region on that night maximizing your chances of getting to see the Northern Lights. Taking a sip from your champagne glass enjoying the Aurora up close is an experience that is sure to stay with you for a lifetime. Around 23h00 the plane will land and the bus will be waiting to take you back to the hotel.
Overnight: Tromsø (B)
Monday – 19 February: Dinner in a lavu
Today follows the same structure as yesterday with the day being at your leisure and then an included activity in the evening. If you have already had enough of exploring Tromsø then the region also offers numerous fun activities that could be optionally be pre-booked such as husky rides and snowmobiling. In the evening at around 18h45 the bus will take you to a lavu, a large local tent, out in the wilderness. After arriving you could quickly visit the huskies at the camp before joining the rest of the group in the lavu. You will be able to enjoy a hot meal of bacalao, local stick fish (cod) with a tomato based sauce. Hopefully at some point the Northern Lights will make an appearance so you can also see them from the ground. Around 23h00 the bus will then return you to your hotel.
