Sao Paulo

Originally a mission station set up in 1554 by Jesuit priests on the banks of the Rio Tiete, the city of Sao Paulo is today an awesome megalopolis, the industrial and commercial powerhouse of Brazil. The city grew wealthy on coffee cultivation in the mid-19th century, thanks to the rich soil of the region, and the plantation owners took up residence in the bustling regional centre. Gradually the coffee barons diversified their interests and invested some of their wealth in the local industry, resulting in a demand for labour and a resultant surge in the immigrant population. Today, 16 million proud Paulistanos live in the congested, chaotic and cosmopolitan city centre and its sprawling surrounds.

Iguassu Falls: Experience the stunning beauty and raw power of one of the greatest natural wonders on Earth. the Iguassu Falls are wider than Victoria Falls and taller than Niagara, set in the tropical jungles near the three-way border between Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.

Sao Paulo
So Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, with its metropolitan area ranking among the largest urban areas in the world.

Jesuit missionaries Manuel da Nbrega and Jos de Anchieta founded the village of So Paulo dos Campos de Piratininga on January 25, 1554. Located just beyond the Serra do Mar cliffs, overlooking the port city of Santos, and close to the Tiet River, the new settlement became the natural entrance from the South East coast to the vast and fertile plateau to the West that would eventually become the State of So Paulo. So Paulo officially became a city in 1711. In the 19th century, it experienced a flourishing economic prosperity, brought about chiefly through coffee exports, which were shipped abroad from the port of the neighbouring city of Santos.

The climate of Sao Paulo may not be as congenial as other Brazilian cities, but it is warm and sunny enough by world standards. The weather remains mild to warm all year round.

The city's sprawling population represents every ethnicity in the country; cuisine in Sao Paulo becomes a matter of choice. There are thousands of restaurants, and if there's something you crave it's bound to be there, be it the obscurest of world cuisine or a simple slice of pizza - a local favourite.
