Casablanca is a city in western Morocco, located on the Atlantic Ocean. Casablanca is Morocco's largest city as well as its chief port.

Casablanca was established as a town in 1906 with a population of 20 000. Later in 1907 when the French landed here, Fez was its commercial center whilst Tangier was set up as the city's main harbor. The French were soon ousted however and had to seek a new port altogether and Tangier remained Moroccan. Things have changed much since then however. With a population of over 3 million, Casablanca resembles a Southern European city. Today all duties are handled here except for administration.

Casablanca has a very mild semi-arid Mediterranean climate. Casablanca's climate is strongly influenced by the cool currents of the Atlantic Ocean which tends to moderate temperatures.

Hassan II Mosque can accommodate 2,500 worshippers inside and another 80,000 in its courtyard; this is a truly monumental complex right next to the sea. It covers a site of 9 hectares (22 acres), making it the world’s second largest religious building after the main Masjid al-Haram mosque in Mecca.

Musée du Judaïsme Marocain (The Jewish Museum) is 5km (3 miles) from the city center, in the suburb of Oasis, this is a truly unique attraction because it is not only Casablanca’s only museum, but it is also the only Jewish museum to be found in any Muslim country anywhere in the world. Set in a modern and well-maintained building are collections of religious books, costumes, sacramental artifacts and other items reflecting the role that the today 5,000-strong Jewish community has had and continues to play in Morocco.

Place Mohammed V (formerly Place des Nations Allies) was laid out as the Place de France in 1920, and then renamed as Place des Nations Allies after WWII, then again to Place Mohammed V; this imposing square is undisputedly the heart of the city. Its arcades are lined with bustling cafés and tacky souvenir shops while the impressive clock tower keeps time over the hustle and bustle.

Casablanca is not renowned for the sophistication of its nightlife, and you really need on the spot advice from a local to get the best out of what is there. Downtown, there is a cabaret and a handful of discos while bars, like the cluster along rue Allal Ben Abdallah, tend to be male-only. For ladies, hotel bars like the Bogart/Bergman-themed Casablanca Bar at the Hyatt Regency are more welcoming.

While bars close fairly early, nightclubs open at 2300 and don’t close until 0300, though the less successful ones are depressingly empty.
