Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg. Salzburg is on the banks of the Salzach River at the northern boundary of the Alps. Salzburg means salt castle, referring to its massive fortress and the white gold from the mountains in the South.

Traces of human settlements have been found in the area, dating to the Neolithic Age; probably it was later a Celt camp. Starting from 15 BCE, the small communities were grouped into a single town, which was named by the Romans as Juvavum. The Life of Saint Rupert credits the saint with the city's rebirth. When Theodo of Bavaria asked Rupert to become bishop c. 700, Rupert reconnoitered the river for the site of his basilica. Rupert chose Juvavum. Rupert named the city "Salzburg", and then left to evangelize among the pagans.

Salzburg is at the Northern edge of the Alps and has a typical Central European climate with hot summers (up to almost 40 degrees Celsius) and cold winters (down to minus 20 degrees Celsius). Crowds peak around July and August, when the Salzburg Festival is held and the summer shows his brightest side. Another top-season is December with the Christmas markets. Both periods are both scenic and pleasant, however, be warned of the masses of tourists and rip-off prices.

Being a university town and a city of music and culture par excellence, Salzburg has a bustling nightlife with a great number of bars, clubs and live music venues.
