About the Holiday

Namibia is a magnificent destination right on our doorstep, if you haven't been put it on your bucket list for 2021, once the borders are hopefully open.
Swakopmund is the premier holiday resort in Namibia. During the summer holidays and long weekends thousands of Namibians flock to the coast. This migration happens for a couple of reasons, Swakopmund has a real holiday feel and everyone wants to be there, and during the December holidays the cool Namibian coast offers relief from the intense heat of the interior.
Sossusvlei is situated in the largest conservation area in Africa (the Namib-Naukluft National Park), Sossusvlei is possibly Namibia's most spectacular and best-known attraction. Characterised by the large red dunes that surround it, Sossusvlei is a large, white, salt and clay pan and is a great destination all year round. The dunes in this area are some of the highest in the world, reaching almost 400 meters, and provide photographic enthusiasts with wonderful images in the beautiful morning and evening light. Sossusvlei literally translates to 'dead-end marsh', as it is the place where the dunes come together preventing the Tsauchab River to flow any further, some 60km east of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a site to behold and best experienced in a hot air balloon taking off at sunrise, it is spectacular!

Swakopmund is a city on the Atlantic coast of northwestern Namibia. Swakopmund is a beach resort and an excellently preserved example of German colonial architecture.

Swakopmund was founded in 1892, two years later than Windhoek, by Captain Curt von Franois. It was intended to be the main harbour of German South-West Africa. On 4 August 1892 the crew of a gunboat named Hyne (German for Hyena) erected two beacons on a large dune, probably in the vicinity of the present lighthouse. This is regarded as the founding date of Swakopmund. The first settlers were 120 Schutztruppe with equipment and 40 settlers who offloaded from the Marie Woermann using four landing boats.

Surrounded by the Namib Desert on three sides and the cold Atlantic waters to the west, Swakopmund enjoys a temperate climate. The average temperature ranges between 15C (59F) to 25C (77F). The cold Benguela current supplies moisture for the area in the form of fog that can reach as deep as 140 km (87 mi) inland. The fauna and flora of the area has adapted to this phenomenon and now relies upon the fog as a source of moisture.

Attractions in Swakopmund include a transport museum, the National Marine Aquarium, a crystal gallery and spectacular sand dunes near Langstrand south of the Swakop River. Outside of the city, the Rossmund Desert Golf Course is one of only 5 all-grass desert golf courses in the world.
