Mahe

Mahe is the largest island (155 km) of the Seychelles, lying in the north east of the nation. Most of the Seychelles' population lives here on the north and east coasts of the island. The island was named for Mahe de Labourdonnais, a governor of Mauritius. It contains the capital city of Victoria. Mahe is surrounded by a string of satellite islands, six of which are found just off the east coast and help to create Victoria's natural harbour.

Mahe was first visited by the British in 1609 and not visited by Europeans again until Lazare Picault's expedition of 1742. Mahe remained a French possession until 1814 when it became a British colony. It remained a colony until 1976 when Seychelles became an independent nation.

Many visitors arrive here only to carry straight on to their hotels on one of the other islands, but Mahe is certainly worth a look. Away from the beaches, the landscape climbs up hills covered in dense rainforests frequently shrouded in mist.

Sainte Anne is the largest of the six islands and is the site of the five star Sainte Anne Resort. Ile Longue used to be a quarantine station and is now a prison. Ile Cachee is just a tiny dot in the ocean and Ile Ronde's main attraction is its excellent restaurant, Chez Gaby, set in an old leper's camp!
